Does your dog run out the door?

This isn’t what you meant when you said you wanted Door Dash!

Instead of delicious hamburgers or sesame tofu, your furry little Houdini has decided they’re in the mood for some neighborhood chaos (or takeout). Before you realize it, they’ve slipped out the front door and are halfway down the street!

Most of the time, a doggy life is pretty boring, and deliveries are exciting. Someone is at the door and we are occupied with a box or maybe even food. Since it’s quiet inside, outside becomes even more enticing because of all the new smells. As soon as your dog’s nose catches a whiff of something more exciting than being inside, it’s only natural that a curious, intelligent animal would want to sieze a golden opportunity for some fun.

Dogs learn quickly that the best way to avoid punishment is to avoid you.

After all, it’s going to be a lot more fun to wander the neighborhood sniffing at their leisure than coming back to an upset pet parent. In that situation, it’s a no-brainer for your dog. You’ll lose every time.

The best thing you can do is to teach your dog to wait at the door.

“Wait” will give you the peace of mind to be able to get your Amazon package without worry. It also teaches your dog to be patient for rewards since they don’t get any goodies until the door is closed! (That’s one of my best hacks for a solid “wait” cue. Let a closed door signal the end of the exercise!)

If you’re not sure where to begin, or you’ve tried to teach your dog “wait” and it’s not working, I’m here to help. Schedule your free consultation with me today, or you can purchase the lesson here.
